| The MSD Board has approved $435,000 (including a $100,000
Federal ISTEA II Grant) for the construction of a Greenways Trail in Southwest Jefferson
County.
The trail will be built along the top of the
flood levee from Greenwood Park, south, to the Farnsley-Moreman Landing. This will be the
first Greenways corridor in Southwest Jefferson County, and will be a part of the overall
plan to provide a recreational trail along the entire length of riverbank in Louisville
and Jefferson County.
The Greenways program is supported by the City
of Louisville, Jefferson County Government, Louisville and Jefferson County Parks
Department, MSD, Riverfields, Inc., and may other private sector partners. The goal is to
reintroduce local residents to the beauty of the Ohio River and create natural connections
between neighborhoods along the Ohio River.
MSD Executive Director Gordon Garner told the
Board, "This is the next logical step in connecting two resource areas, Greenwood
Park and Farnsley Moreman. The view along the river, in this area, is beautiful."
MSD will begin construction of this section in
late spring 2000. The path will be constructed of recycled asphalt that is excavated from
MSD construction projects. The trail will be eight feet wide and will be four miles long.
The trail will also fix erosion problems that exist on the levee.
A report on Greenways projects in Jefferson
County is available from MSD.
