FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

June 12, 2000

Since Tuesday, June 6, MSD has been working to replace a collapsed section of 24-inch (diameter) brick sewer between York Street and Broadway on Seventh Street. Replacement has progressed from York to Broadway.

Late this morning, an MSD television inspection crew discovered a large, open cavity under the eastbound lanes of Broadway. This cavity could be the result of the collapsed sewer line in Seventh Street.

For public safety reasons, MSD has immediately begun closing two eastbound lanes on Broadway between Eighth and Sixth Streets. Temporary eastbound lanes will be designated from the center/westbound lanes. Seventh Street, between York and Broadway, will be closed with traffic routed west to Ninth Street.

Emergency excavation will begin to repair sewer damage at the intersection of Seventh and Broadway. No timetable for completion of this work can be predicted at this time, but work will proceed around the clock.
