Re: MSD to Participate in
National Pilot Project to Improve Water Quality
The Louisville and Jefferson
County Metropolitan Sewer District (MSD) is one of only five Publicly
Owned Wastewater Treatment Facilities in the country selected to help
reinvent the way that pollution from industrial sources is controlled.
MSD will participate in the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's
Project XL (eXcellence and Leadership) Program. This national pilot
program will allow selected sewage treatment agencies to test whether
better and more cost-effective methods can be used to improve water
quality. MSD's XL project will take place in the Jeffersontown
Wastewater Treatment Service Area/Chenoweth Run Watershed. MSD intends
to use Project XL to achieve additional reductions of key pollutants.
The project will also help identify areas where resources can be
better targeted to achieve greater environmental benefits.
A draft final project
agreement which describes MSD's proposed project for the Jeffersontown
Wastewater Treatment Plant pretreatment program will be available for
public comment from August 22, 2000 to September 12, 2000. Copies will
be available from Melinda Greene at EPA (404-562-9771) or Sharon
Worley at MSD (502-540-6464).
The public is invited to a
meeting to discuss this project. The meeting will be held on Thursday
August 24, 2000 at 7:00 P.M. at the Jeffersontown Public Library
(10635 Watterson Trail).
The Final Project Agreement
is to be signed by MSD, the KY Department for Environmental
Protection, and EPA in September 2000.
If you have questions about
this project, please contact MSD Community Relations/Emergency
Response Director, Bud Schardein, at 540-6319 or the Project Manager,
