FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

February 8, 2001

On Saturday, February 10, 2001, the Louisville Chapter of Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers will sponsor the annual MATHCOUNTS Competition. This nationwide math competition for 6th, 7th and 8th graders with a passion for math and the challenge of competition begins at the local level.

Over 150 students from Bullitt, Oldham, Spencer and Jefferson Counties will meet at the University Of Louisville Speed Scientific School, Ernst Hall, at 8:00 A.M. to compete in the math subjects of algebra, probability, statistics and geometry. The mathletes will be competing for a chance to attend the state competition in Lexington where the prizes are four (4) full-tuition scholarships to either the University of Kentucky or the University of Louisville, which the universities have donated. In addition, the four top state competition winners and the top team coach will receive an all-expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. in May to compete in the MATHCOUNTS national finals.

The Schedule of Events for February 10 is as follows:

8:00 AM  Registration
8:30 AM Opening Address
9:00 AM  Sprint and Target Round
10:50AM  Team Round
11:30 AM  Lunch at WS Speed Building
12:30 PM  Countdown Round (This "quick recall" event is a must-see! The mathletes solve problems quicker than most people can read the questions.)

See Attachment A and Attachment B for a listing of schools competing in the local competition and more information about the MATHCOUNTS program.

As a co-sponsor, MSD encourages news coverage of this worthy educational event. If you have questions, please contact MSD Community Relations Director, Bud Schardein at 540-6319 or MSD Floyds Fork Area Team Leader and MATHCOUNTS Local Competition Chairperson Vicki Coombs at 540-6131.

Students Can't Wait to Take Math Tests on Saturday

(February 2, 2001 - Frankfort, KY): Come Saturday morning, February 10, over 800 middle school students across the Commonwealth of Kentucky will wake up early and be excited about taking a series of math tests all morning long. It's the 2001 MATHCOUNTS Chapter Competitions that will be taking place in 13 different locations across Kentucky, representing the Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers' year-long effort to encourage 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students to strengthen skills in math, science, leadership, and team work - all skills the engineers hope to impress upon the students as essential to their future academic and work careers.

Until this year, MATHCOUNTS, which was founded in 1983 by the National Society of Professional Engineers and CNA Insurance Company, held participation to 7th and 8th grade students on a team of 4 students per school. But citing the desire to get more students involved and building the math skills, the program opened up to 6th graders this year and expanded the number of participants allowed per school to a maximum of 8. As a result of the rule changes, Kentucky's State MATHCOUNTS Chairman, Randal S. Williamson, P.E., a mechanical design engineer with Lexmark International, Inc. in Lexington, says Kentucky's program "grew by leaps and bounds to achieve a 54.8% increase in students over last year."

The 811 students that will compete in the first phase of competition on February 10 represent 137 schools (see attached list by chapter). With the new rules allowing more students, many schools took advantage of the opportunity. Sixty-one schools, or 44.5%, of the total schools registered a maximum of 8 students. Seventy-seven schools, or 56.2%, of the 137 schools registered a 4-person team and some additional number of individual students. Fifty-six schools, or 40.9% of the total, registered a 4-person team only. Six schools, or 4.4%, registered with less than 4 persons.

Students say they are willing to get up early on a Saturday morning to take math tests most of the day because the competitions are fun and challenging. Others say that what gets them moving is opportunity to advance to upper levels of competition where college scholarships and other awards are on the line. In fact, the students competing on February 10 will be hoping to advance to the Kentucky state competition on March 24 in Lexington, where they will be competing for 4-year, full-tuition college scholarships to either the University of Kentucky or the University of Louisville. State winners will also be looking forward to an expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C. in May, where they will compete in the National MATHCOUNTS competition and hope for more scholarships, gold medals, a trip to U.S. Space Camp, and more.

The Kentucky Society of Professional Engineers, headquartered in Frankfort, Kentucky, sponsors the MATHCOUNTS program through its non-profit, education-based corporation, the Kentucky Engineering Foundation, Inc. The program is operated and administered by volunteers from the engineering community with financial support by many companies, individuals, and organizations. Among the supporters are the University of Kentucky and the University of Louisville, which provide the scholarships. Other financial supporters include: KFC Corporation, Kentucky Consulting Engineers Council, ALCOA Foundation, Kentucky Association of Transportation Engineers, Lexmark International, Inc., LG&E Foundation/Kentucky Utilities Company, and Ashland Inc., to name a few.
