At approximately
5:45 A.M. this morning (Tuesday, July 10), a spill was reported on the
eastbound lanes of Interstate 264 between Cane Run Road and Dixie
Highway. The spill was first identified as cow manure and was declared
a Level 1 spill by the Shively Fire Department.
MSD and Health
Department officials were asked to respond. Upon arrival, MSD
representatives identified the material as wastewater solids. MSD
contracts with Waste Management, Inc., to haul waste solids from the
Morris Forman Wastewater Treatment Plant to the Outer Loop Landfill.
The spill area is along the route used by Waste Management.
MSD is currently
performing lab analysis to determine whether the material is that of
treated solids that are hauled by Waste Management or is a material
that might have been spilled by another hauler.
The Louisville
Police Department reported at least two accidents in this section of
the roadway after the spill, with one person transported to the
hospital.
At this time, the
cause of the spill has not been determined. Details will follow after
the truck is inspected and the driver is interviewed.
Waste Management,
Inc., and the State Highway Department are currently in the process of
removing the spilled material from the roadway. Traffic is moving
along two lanes of the three-lane roadway.
