Rain Gauge Network

In Spring of 2003, fifteen new telemetry-equipped rain gauges were installed throughout Jefferson County. This rain gauge system serves two primary functions – to calibrate NEXRAD radar with rain gauge data, and to provide predictive rainfall data two hours in advance of rainfall. This information will be utilized by both MSD’s RTC project and for emergency response preparation. The new rain gauge network provides a better geographical coverage of Jefferson County. MSD is in the process of establishing three satellite-enabled rain gauges in the Southern Indiana Counties of Harrison, Floyd and Clark. These proposed rain gauges will provide MSD with the ability to calibrate approaching storms. The RTC project requires a two-hour predictive capability. Having rain gauges located outside of Jefferson County will provide MSD with this resource.
