Louisville/Jefferson County
Floodplain Management Plan

What Natural Hazards Are Most Common in Louisville?
Because of where it is located geographically, Louisville is primarily at risk from flooding, severe thunderstorms, hailstorms, and tornados. Go to All Hazards to view Louisville Metro’s Natural Hazard Mitigation Plan adopted in May 2005.

The Louisville / Jefferson County Floodplain Management Plan is a comprehensive plan identifying the community's floodplain inventory and challenges, by watershed. Chronicled in the plan is a history of flooding, a summary of the Advisory Committee partnerships, and a description of the programs being implemented to mitigate flood losses.

Adopted by the Old City of Louisville and Jefferson Fiscal Court in February 2000, the Floodplain Management Plan outlines a Five-Year Action Plan for mitigation to eliminate or reduce flood losses. The Floodplain Management Plan was readopted, along with the revised Floodplain Management Ordinance in August 2005. See the revised Action Plan below (2002 revised Action Plan). Read the Floodplain Management Plan overview for more information.

Mission Statement:
The mission of the Louisville/Jefferson County Community Rating System (CRS) and Project Impact is to develop a process to guide the community in a coordinated effort to reduce flood damages to life and property and protect the natural and beneficial functions of the floodplain. Moreover, the overall goal of the Floodplain Management Plan is to guide the community in a holistic, coordinated effort to raise the consciousness of the flood-risk and to reduce flood damages to life and property.

2004 Floodplain Management Plan Progress Report
This report outlines the status of existing identified action plan activities, describes actions taken by various agencies and organizations to reduce flood losses, and identifies the need for further action. It specifically reports on the progress of the community that has occurred during the five-year Floodplain Management Plan (FPMP) Action Plan implementation period. This progress report will be updated annually.
